Contact lens wear during COVID-19 As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, patients continue to look to doctors of optometry, their primary eye health care physicians, for accurate eye health and vision guidance. When it comes to contact lens wear, the American Optometric Association (AOA) and doctors of optometry want to reinforce that contact lenses are a safe and effective form of vision correction for millions of people. The AOA provides the following advice to ensu...re proper wear and care for contact lenses. Exercise Proper Hand Washing. When using contact lenses or spectacles, one should wash their hands carefully and thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, followed by hand drying with unused paper towels. This should occur before every contact lens insertion and removal. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. People should avoid touching their face, including their eyes, nose and mouth, with unwashed hands. Disinfect Contact Lenses. Contact lens wearers should either dispose of their daily disposable lenses each evening, or regularly disinfect their monthly and two-week lenses according to instructions from the manufacturer and one's doctor of optometry. Discontinue Lens Wear if Sick. Consistent with recommendations for other types of illness, those who feel ill with cold or flu-like symptoms should cease contact lens wear. Glasses are Not Proven to Offer Protection. There is no scientific evidence that wearing spectacles or glasses provides protection against COVID-19 or other viral transmissions. Healthy individuals can continue to wear and care for their contact lenses as prescribed by their doctor of optometry.

We are working diligently to maintain a clean, healthy environment for our patients as we have done for over 50 years. The Centers for Disease Control has recommended that routine eye exams be postponed. For this reason, we are trying to limit our exams to urgent and emergency care. Please r...est assured that we will not turn away any patient in need. However, if you are coming in for routine care, we ask that your visit be postponed as directed by the CDC guidelines. In addition, if you are currently experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 infection (fever, cough, shortness of breath) we ask that you do not come to the office. Please call for instructions. I anticipate that we will need to modify our policies and office hours to evolve along with this very fluid pandemic. The Optometric Community is planning a celebration of life event to honor the impact Dr. Fontana has had on the profession of optometry and thousands of patients. This event was initially being planned for October 27th. However, due to the logistics of planning such an event with many out of town attendees, it has been postponed. We will provide updates as they become available. Thank you to everyone who has provided us with so much love and support already.

Few people have had as much positive impact on so many as did St. Louis optometrist Dr. Frank Fontana. Affectionately called Uncle Frank by hundreds of peers and friends throughout optometry, Dr. Fontana earned his nickname by serving as a mentor and advocate for countless optometric educators and future leaders of the profession. He was an internationally recognized speaker and a true pioneer during the early years of contact lenses, helping train many of his colleagues th...roughout the US in this then new technology. He died in Las Vegas on October 3 at age 96, after suffering a stroke a few days earlier while attending Vision Expo West, a major eyecare conference. Frank Fontana began his career after serving in World War II, spending 35 months in the Army, 28 of those stationed in Europe. Educated under the G.I. Bill, he graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1949 and opened his practice in St. Louis the following year. He continued practicing throughout and leaves many generations of patients who he has cared for since they were children. Dr. Fontana held leadership positions in many groups, including the Missouri Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association (AOA). He founded the Contact Lens & Cornea Section of the AOA and co-founded the Heart of America Contact Lens Society. In a long and distinguished career, he worked alongside optometric publications, manufacturers and educators, and received countless honors, including recognition on the floor of the Missouri Statehouse, where the governor-a patient of his-told officials Dr. Fontana was the reason he could see at all. Beloved husband of the late Dorris A. Fontana. Loving father of Don (Terry) Fontana and Frankie Fontana. Dear grandfather of A.J. (Trish) Fontana and Laura (Mark) Hambrecht. Great grandfather of Dylan Fontana. Brother of the late Edward J. Fontana.
