If your horse steps on a nail, or other foreign object, don't pull it out of the foot. It may not appear to be much, or to be going a certain direction, but loo...ks can be deceiving. There are multiple vital structures that can be affected and/or penetrated. These include the third phalanx (coffin bone) the navicular bone and its associated bursa, the deep digital flexor tendon and its associated tendon sheath, the coffin joint, and a number of other ligaments within the hoof capsule. These inherently dirty objects can cause tetanus, or infection within whatever structure is affected will occur. Septic osteomyelitis, septic bursitis, septic tenosynovitis, etc. Once the offending instrument is removed, it is very difficult to find the hole again, and impossible to know where it went within the hoof capsule. By leaving the object and having a radiograph taken, it can be determined where the nail went and what structure may be affected. This allows appropriate treatment. Blood flow! As farriers we are constantly thinking about improving the blood flow (perfusion) of the foot, in the trim and or shoe application. What if there are other systemic issues that cant be addressed with just appropriately supporting the feet? Addressing the horses ENTIRE circulatory and microcirculation system is why we choose to offer a supportive therapy to complement our hoof care! Ask us about the importance of blood flow!
Thank you for a fun (but crazy windy) day at the God's Green Acre Ranch Fun Show! We had a blast sharing BEER with you and your horses while raising funds for this awesome equestrian non-profit!
Four more days!!!!
Come visit us next weekend!!!
August 2020 - October 2020 Before and after of medial wall
Necrotic tissue flushed out with cleantrax soak.
Red light applied as a supportive therapy to assist and stimulate wound healing. Pen light was used for smaller targeted areas and pain-free pad system used for larger areas.
July 2020 - October 2020: the owners diligence was a huge factor in this mares recovery. Owner did daily wrapping and treatment of the infected areas. We provided weekly cleantrax soaks, red light therapy, BEMER and careful debridment of the diseased tissue helped clear the infection and keep the mare sound throughout treatment.
10/5/20: infection fully cleared and horn keratinized. We will continue to monitor and debride the area to try and minimize dorsal wall scarring as much as possible to preserve the integrity of the hoof.
7/5/20: On the left side of this radiograph multiple abscess tracts are visible.
