October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month and we are celebrating Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23-31. Alcohol and drug addiction happens in the best of families. Dependence on alcohol and drugs is the most serious national public health problem. It is prevalent among rich and poor, in all regions of the country, and all ethnic and social groups. We would like to thank all those involved in making our Drive-Thru Trunk or Treat a success. A special Thank You goes to: 1) CCMH staff and community partners who donated candy, 2) Individuals and groups who braved the cold weather and created displays, 3) CCMH staff who stuffed the treat bags, and 4) Community members who attended.... We are excited to report that our effort to provide a safe and fun trick-or-treating option during COVID-19 yielded approximately 120 vehicles driving through to see the displays, and approximately 210 bags of candy passed out to children who attended. We were also happy to be able to donate the remaining candy to other local organizations who are hosting Halloween events.

In honor of Substance Abuse Prevention Month and Red Ribbon Week, Carroll County Memorial Hospital teamed up with The Gathering Table through the Carroll County Coalition to film Seeing Through the Eyes of an Addict. Each year, the Coalition provides content to area schools about substance abuse prevention and, this year, they are presenting the stories of three local individuals whose lives have been impacted by drug use. CCMH and The Gathering Table would like to thank the individuals in the video for the bravery and vulnerability they showed while sharing their experiences in an effort to reach students and prevent substance abuse.

Halloween will be different this year, but it can still be special, according to the CDC. Get creative to celebrate in fun ways that help protect your community from COVID-19. Organize a scavenger hunt for Halloween-themed things at home. Carve and decorate pumpkins with people you live with. If you’d like to carve with neighbors and friends, do so outside and at least 6 feet apart. Show your best Halloween costume to your friends and family via video calls and photos. https://bit.ly/33WSfSr

Carroll County Memorial Hospital wants to congratulate all our youth this week as they wear their red ribbons stating "I Am Drug Free!" Red Ribbon Week, which is celebrated annually October 23-31, is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program. Red Ribbon Week was started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique Kiki Camarena, who in 1985 was brutally tortured and murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating ...in Mexico. As a tribute to SA Camarena, high school friend, Henry Lozano and Congressman Duncan Hunter, created Camarena Clubs and the wearing of a red ribbon to show their oppositions to drugs. In 1988, the National Family Partnership coordinated the first National Red Ribbon Week with President and Mrs. Reagan serving as honorary Chairpersons. Since then, the Red Ribbon campaign has taken on national significance, and NFP continues to coordinate the campaign for families, schools and communities across the nation each year. Wearing red ribbons during the month of October continues to represent our pledge to live drug free and honors the sacrifice of all who have lost their lives in the fight against drugs. We encourage you to take the pledge and Live Drug Free!
