Kelly’s Westport Inn and the Kelly family share the community’s desire to shine a light on systemic racism and to study and learn from our collective history. We have been listening to the Black community and want to make changes for the betterment of our society. Recent protests have focused on the Westport building’s history from the 1800s. We are eager to shine a light on any racial injustices that occurred in or around this building in the course of American history. We... acknowledge there are parts of our building's history that are a painful reminder to the Black community, and for that we are deeply sorry. We want to bring them to light and respectfully honor the Black community. We asked the Westport Historical Society for the known facts and this is what they confirmed: * The building, constructed in 1851, was once owned by Albert Gallatin Boone who was a slave owner. Although there is not primary documentation that slaves were held in the basement of the Boone Building, the historical evidence supports this claim. * Although the Westport Historical Society does not have primary documentation that slaves were held in the basement of the Boone Building prior to their being sold elsewhere in Westport, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th hand statements support this claim. * From the time the building was erected until 1934, the only businesses in the building were mercantile, hardware, and grocery stores. In 1934, a bar business began operation in the building and a bar has been in continuous operation, in said building, since that date. For the past 150+ years the various businesses and operators at 500 Westport Road have had no affiliation with slavery. We want to be transparent about our building's history without celebrating the past atrocities that occurred here. We are eager to learn more about the best way to do this. We have started by covering a plaque hung inside Kelly's that was dedicated to Albert Boone. Our father and grandfather, Randal Kelly, came to the US from Ireland in 1926 in search of a better life. In 1947, Randal began bartending at the building. He called this Irish Pub the poor man’s playground where people of all walks could gather. Then and always, Kelly’s is committed to honoring the Irish phrase posted above our door: Failte "Welcome. And that goes for everyone.
