As someone who had years of getting sick (like fully taken out of commission, time traveling sick) at the worst times, I wholeheartedly believe it was due to not letting myself rest when I needed it. Sometimes I have a fear of being seen as lazy (which ties into body shame, but that’s for another post) or less than others I perceive as actively living their lives, but this is something that I have been working on allowing space for without judgment, because it truly has bee...n invaluable to my overall health the past couple of years. A must read if you're interested in fostering or adopting a child who comes from a different place than you do. It is so easy to overlook or take things for granted when coming from places of privilege, and we have to do better if we really want to help children.
I've had a lot of people tell me, "I wouldn't even know what to say", or often describe challenges to me that would absolutely be appropriate for therapy. Most of us don't think anything of going in to get oil changes on our cars every 3 months, and are great with keeping our routine check-ups at the doctor, but for some reason a lot of folks have this block when it comes to investing in mental health. If you don't know what to say, it's ok to see a therapist. If you don't really know what's wrong, it's ok to see a therapist. If you just feel like maybe it's time for a tune-up, it's ok to see a therapist. Bottom line is, it's ok (and it's probably a pretty smart investment in your overall maintenance/well-being).
