Oh hi ! Just a few of the beautiful faces who have been to see us recently (or who we went out to see). Happy Sunday everyone. Enjoy the day with all your wonderful friends.

Don't sleep through the latest episode of Pet Resource Radio, friends. We talk leptospirosis (lepto) with Dr. Nichols, which is becoming a bit of a concern in the metro. We have the right conditions for it and it's even zoonotic (can pass from pets to humans). Listn now: https://podcasts.apple.com//leptospirosis-wi/id1518439646

Our friends at Collegiate Canines are offering great collars for our furry friends and helping us do our work at the same time. Every Be Kind collar sends a donation in support of keeping pets and people together.

One of the best parts of this job is getting to spend time with so many pets. It's even better when we're out doing mobile vaccinations, because we get to see pets in their home environment. That gives us the opportunity to talk about any supplies the pet might need to live their best life. It also means we can take a little more time to get up close and personal, like with our friend Patches here. And we're never gonna complain about that

We're looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers. Or rather, estamos en busca de voluntarios que hablen español. Like Lisa, who really enjoys what she does here at PRCKC. "I like volunteering because it's a way for me to give back and I love being around dogs and cats," she says. "It also gives me a sense of accomplishment, whether it's helping my community or helping animals in need. I chose PRCKC because I wanted to expand my volunteer "wings" and I saw the many opportunitie...s PRCKC has to offer." Lisa does a little of everything, including helping with drive-thru clinics, communicating with Spanish-speaking clients, distributing resources like toys, treats, leashes, etc., and assisting with puppy training classes. I like it because it gives me a chance to learn each aspect of PRCKC and meeting and working with new people. Bilingual volunteers are important, Lisa adds, because people don’t seek or ask for help because of the language barrier. English should not be a disadvantage for those families needing assistance or care for their pets. The difference it can make in having bilingual volunteers is that it will increase the number of families and pets PRCKC will help." This is a huge need for our Outreach activities -- dog/puppy training, drive-thrus, pet food pop ups, sit-n-serves, pretty much everything we do out in the community. If you are interested in becoming a bilingual volunteer, please visit: https://prckc.galaxydigital.com/

Another week in the books! Every week's a big one around here, and we love it. We see over 400 pets a week for vaccinations, and another 200 for surgery, and this week was no exception. Plus, we took on the care of a couple of heartworm-positive dogs and got them started on treatment, not to mention our first Westlake Wednesday of the month! And our First Friday/Super Saturday special always brings out lots of great folks. It was a great week for helping pets and their people!

Getting to the end of the year always makes us assess what we've accomplished. And this year's been a big one. Did you know that we provided over 50 tons of pet food just this year to both clients and other organizations?!

We saw over 160 pets at our drive-thru vaccination clinic this past weekend! It was great weather for it, and it felt so good to be out in the community helping folks. Big thanks to everyone who made this event a success, and special thanks to our volunteer photographer Sara for these great shots!

Andi is a critical part of our clinic team. You might not see her much but she's always there, behind the scenes, making sure pets get great care and we continue to have a positive impact on the community. Watch this short piece to hear why she does what she does. #Givingback

This is what a lazy Sunday morn is made for: listening to Rae, one of our hero outreach team members talking about winter pet needs. We also talk about the harmful effects of breed labels and throw a shout out to our friends at Humane Society of Greater Kansas City. Listen to the latest from Pet Resource Radio. https://podcasts.apple.com//winter-needs-wit/id1518439646

Always keep moving, always keep growing. It's not our motto, but it very easily could be. It's the only way to keep ahead of things. To reach more people. To give our clients the best service, the best care. That makes every week a new challenge. We have to ask ourselves what we can do better, how can we challenge the status quo to create new opportunities to help. It means we change the layout of our parking lot, for example, to improve flow and make things easier during dro...p-off and pick-up. It means we spend that extra time talking to a client so their anxieties are calmed. It means we find ways to say "yes" to clients and make magic happen to keep a pet and a person together. It's all important. It's all part of what we do. A big thanks to all the people who make what we do possible. With your support, we're always up to the task, no matter what it is.

Picking a name for your pet can either be very easy or very difficult, but nonetheless always fun! And we're not trying to sound biased or anything (okay, maybe a smidge), but our clients have picked some of the BEST names we've ever heard! You have the ones named after celebrities, like Catrick Mahomes and Steve Purrwin, or whose owners were hungry when they decided on their name, like Waffles or Princess Pickles. Then you have those like Mustachio or Edwina Bottomtooth name...d after their glamorous appearance or the ones who, frankly, have the funniest human names ever, like Kevin and Dwight, but totally work! Oh, and can't forget about sibling duos, Biscuits and Gravy or Cannoli and Ravioli! So we're dying to know, does your pet have a unique name? And if so, where does it come from? Make sure to post a photo of them and tell us all about it below!

Owning a puppy or kitten for the first time is a very exciting experience, but it also comes with a ton of questions! When are they old enough to get the rabies vaccine? When's a good time to start socializing them or taking them out in public? How old or big do they need to be to get spayed or neutered? To be on flea and tick prevention? Well, our lovely team of veterinarians have answered these questions for you! Your puppy or kitten is old enough to get the rabies vaccine ...between 3-4 months old. However, it's very common to wait until its third round of boosters, which ends up falling closer toward the 4-month mark. Don't worry if you don't know how old your pet is because vets can also base it off of whether they've started to get their adult teeth in, which is typically between 4-5 months old. Our vets recommend waiting the extra time because the older they are, the more the vaccine stays in their system, protecting them from getting rabies. You should start socializing your puppy as early as possible, but as safely as possible. This includes with both pets and people. If you have other dogs at home or friends with dogs who you know are up to date on vaccines, socialization is safe and very important in the early stages. What you want to avoid is taking them to public places (such as dog parks, pet stores, etc.) where they might cross paths with another dog that's not vaccinated and that could potentially pass along a disease. Once your pet has had all three boosters for at least two weeks, you're safe to take them out on adventures! Lastly, they're old enough to get spayed or neutered if they're 3 months old or weigh at least three pounds. However, we HIGHLY recommend they've had all three rounds of vaccines for at least two weeks before having surgery, which is usually puts them around 4-5 months old. Flea and tick prevention can be a little different because each brand has its own age and weight requirements. So ALWAYS consult with your veterinarian before applying any type of product. We hope this helped! Please reach out to us at 816-353-0940 if you'd like to schedule an appointment/have any questions!
