Preterm-born c...hildren are at higher risk for more developmental needs and delays when compared to full-term peers. Inaccurate understanding of bilingualism leads many to abandon their home language to help the child! But research is suggesting otherwise so our decisions and recommendations should be otherwise. How to use recasting to support your child's language development: Giving parents tips for encouraging their young child's communication is one of our favorite parts of our jobs! Let's talk about a technique called "recasting".... Recasting: repeat back what they said, but improve it a little. *Your "improved" example can focus on pronounciation or grammar or making their sentence longer *The goal is NOT to make them repeat you, just to give them an example of what they could have said instead. Don't TELL them to say anything differently; just expose them to your example. *This techinque works for all ages and abilities. -For example, if your two month old says "ooo" while looking towards her bottle, you can recast that to "bottle!". Basically, you are pretending she said a word that she may have wanted to say. -If your two year old says "Momma work", you can recast that to "Momma goes to work!". You are giving her an example of a longer, more difficult sentence that she may use in the future!

Learning to talk and produce specific sounds can be hard! However, it's important to praise the effort! Giving credit for accuracy isn't always possible or even honest, but being specific about the effort that may eventually lead to succes may help get there faster!
Some children love to listen to adults read stories and name pictures in a book. However, I often hear "my child doesn't like books". Maybe. Often I find tha...t it's more about wanting to move, wanting to play, or wanting to be the leader. You CAN allow children to do ALL of those things with books! Sometimes reading the book is not as important as "reading" your child's cues.
