"Can" you dig it? Home preservation techniques like making jams and jellies have long been a way to extend the shelf life of produce and to be able to enjoy seasonal fruits and veggies year-round. These recipes were featured in the winter 1944 "Today's Home," a copy of which is in our Stumberg collection.

Did you know that St. Charles once had a German-language newspaper? Many areas of Missouri have a rich German-American heritage (think Hermann). In the late 1800s into the early 1900s, enough St. Charles residents spoke and read German to warrant a local newspaper in that language. Here at SCCHS, we have copies of obituaries from the Demokrat and are working on translating them from German into English. Wunderbar!

Today is #HeritageTreasures Day! It was founded in and is primarily observed by the UK, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate it too, since there is such a wealth of history in our area. What is your favorite local heritage place or object?

#MeatlessMonday may seem like a recent trend, but the idea of meatless meals was actually touted during the World Wars as a way of supporting the war effort. Here are some meat-free recipe suggestions from 1944, courtesy of our Stumberg collection.

Good news for our members: we're working on adding new content to the "Research" section of our website! We've recently added a more complete index of the baptisms of All Saints Catholic Church, and are in the process of uploading an index to the Baue Funeral Home Records. We will continue adding new content as we are able to make our collections more accessible and our website more useful to you!

It's #GivingTuesday! Since 2012, people around the world have spent the Tuesday after Thanksgiving giving back to their neighbors and communities. This Giving Tuesday, we encourage you to consider supporting the Saint Charles County Historical Society, whether in the form of becoming a member, making a financial contribution, or donating your time as a research volunteer.

Pumpkin season may be winding down, but we can enjoy photos like these year-round! This is a view from "Pennsylvania Dutch Country" (Lancaster area) on a postcard in our Stumberg collection.

On this date in 1965, work on the Gateway Arch was completed. Here are a pair of "before" and "after" photos, both from our Parker Collection.

Tomorrow is the last day to respond to the 2020 Census. If your household has not participated yet, it is quick and easy to do by phone at 884-330-2020 or online at my2020census.gov The Census is important for your community to receive its fair share of federal funding, and is also important for future genealogists and researchers to have an accurate understanding of the present. Here’s a snapshot of some of the census information in the SCCHS reference collection:

#FlashbackFriday: It's American Archives Month! Our Archives moved to the second floor of the Old Market House, formerly the old City Hall and Police Station, in the first part of October 1979 and was back up and running by the first of November. Dan Afflick (standing on ladder) and his crew of Boy Scouts assisted in moving the Archives from 117 Jefferson Street, across the alley. Most of the materials and the furnishings were carried across the alley and to the second floor of the Old Market House by the Boy Scouts. Here, Archivist Emma Porter looks on from the second floor window. #ArchivesMonth
