Our 7th grade theatre students ended their term yesterday with a Commedia del’Arte competition. Dr. Erwin explains, Commedia is an Italian Renaissance art form that is the basis for all modern comedy. The plays featured a plot outline with improvised dialogue and LOTS of physical comedy. The plays are known for ‘lowbrow’ and slapstick comedy. Commedia is performed wearing masks (which is where our Mardi Gras masks originated) and uses stock characters and extreme stereotypes. For the competition, the class was divided in two troupes: The Belgian Lacemaker and the Italian Shoemaker. They each prepared a 20-minute performance to be presented for the Lords and Ladies of the Viscount’s Court.
