Therapy Tip Tuesday! sensory messy play! The tactile (touch) sensory system is just one of the several sensory systems we use to explore our environment! Learning to process this tactile input is important for other daily activities such as eating, getting dressed, even playing outside (mud, grass, mulch, oh my!) sensory tactile play can be anything from rocks to finger paint to slime to water beads! Worried about your kiddo putting objects in their mouth? Try these ed...ible options- noodles, pudding, applesauce, ketchup, or yogurt! The options are truly endless! sensory tactile play doesn’t stop with our hands! Exploring textures with our feet is great too! Ice skate in shaving cream, use feet to find objects in a bowl of water beads, or simply go barefoot outside! Other benefits- loads of fun creating for longer attention spans and increased motivation! Time to get messy! See more

Happy Valentine’s Day weekend check out this festive activity from one of our SLP’s working on descriptive language skills and word-finding by describing pictures and locations! Activity: describe the different hearts and explain where to place them in relation to one another (the orange heart with three green circles is under the heart with vertical purple stripes) For extra fun: make it a game by placing the hearts, taking a picture, removing them, then trying to recreate the picture from the child’s description! We hope you have a warm, happy, and lovely Valentine’s Day

Do you or someone you know struggle with ADL activities (instrumental activities of daily living)? Try a work box! This type of close ended functional task promotes pre-vocational skills such as packaging, following a visual list, initiation, and sequencing. You can even increase the challenge by using a written list vs. a visual list (like the one pictured below) Goal areas addressed: executive functioning, task initiation, multi-step directions, following and establishing routines, sequencing, and attention

In terms of communication, Trick-or-Treating can potentially be an overwhelming experience. For individuals that have a difficult time communicating their thoughts and ideas, we recommend taking a no-tech AAC support along with you. You can print this graphic, laminate, and hold up to the listener when you approach each house. This can reduce the overall pressure and allow for a positive communication and trick-or-treating experience.

We sure do love the community here in Cherry Hill village (home location for our Therapy Unlimited clinic and The Treehouse)--Our thoughtful neighbor, Mr. Steve, dropped off these darling little pumpkins to give to our littles. You should see their eyes light up when they get to select their very own pumpkin to take home. Thank you Mr. Steve, we appreciate YOU!

Language facilitation doesn't have to be boring! Ms. Anna demonstrates a fun and engaging way to encourage reduplicated syllables and bilabial sounds through playing with bubbles. Our sweet little friend was unable to imitate sounds in the beginning, but look at him go now! As you can see, Ms. Anna is using the bubble gun as a positive reinforcer for communication/imitation attempts in addition to a "request" for continued play. It's hard to see in this video, but additionally, Ms. Anna is using a hand signal to demonstrate the "plosive" manner of the /b/ sound. Pairing hand cues, verbal models, and positive praise and reinforcement can do wonders for facilitation of communication and language.

Cooler weather today has us feeling a big more fall festive! Here's a fall-themed activity you can do at home. Matching Pumpkins!... Doing this activity addresses visual discrimination skills and visual scanning- two important visual perceptual skills needed for drawing and writing! As a fun way to increase the challenge- have your kiddo draw the pattern in an outline of a pumpkin after matching!

Just in time for the Halloween season-- Let's play "Feed the Monster!" This is a great preparatory activity to use prior to writing and coloring. The game targets hand strengthening by squeezing open the tennis ball. You have to do this motion in order to feed the monster by placing small beads or buttons as the food into the tennis ball. These smaller objects target fine motor coordination and bilateral integration!

There is so much that can be said about this photo--- from the beautiful weather to the amazing people. But what seems to sum it up the most is this: We are thankful that we have our health and the ability to have a physically distanced but in-person staff meeting. And even more than that, we are incredibly grateful our staff has been able to continue serving the speech and occupational needs of our community. Have a very Happy Friday, from our team to you!

Therapy Tip Thursday: Create a fall sensory bin at home! Benefits: basic concepts (colors, objects), following directions, exploration/expanded communication, manipulation skills (scooping/dumping), motor planning (utensil use), pincer grasp (pick up items out of the bin to identify and sort), pretend play (pretending to cook, hiding, etc.), visual perceptual skills (locating items in a busy environment), turn taking (play with your child, play with a sibling or a peer), and ...tactile sensory processing (exploring different textures with their hands which can indirectly address oral sensory processing as well)! WOAH! In addition, you can create a visual list of items for the child to find in the bin or identify a certain number of items for them to find. Ultimately-- explore together, learn together, and have fun! https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/best-preschool-fall-se

Wearing a facemask is hard for everyone. We understand it can feel frustrating and like an inconvenience. But at the end of the day, we're all doing a small part to help prevent the spread of COVID19. Lovevery has created a FREE downloadable picture book called "Doing My Part" that addresses wearing a face mask. The language in the short story is clear and concise, which is exactly what we would would recommend when using social stories in therapy. We also love that the... book features real-life pictures. Click the link below to have your free book emailed directly to you! As a side note-- Lovevery is a resource we often share with families when they are searching for toys and activities to use with their children in order to develop language, communication, social, emotional, and motor skills (and more). https://lovevery.com/
