My Great Great Grandfather Severin Malcolm "Sven" Swanson S. M. SWANSON, is of Swedish birth, having been born in that country November 7, 1853. He received his... early education in the district schools of Sweden, and spent his young life in hard work. At the age of eighteen he sought the better opportunities of the New World, and emigrated to this country, landing in Quebec May 8, 1872. His first employment was railroad work by the day in Pennsylvania. He then came to Kirksville where he was employed for three years by Chas. Patterson, the nurseryman. Mr. Swanson returned to Chicago and remained some time, after which in 1878, he came to Greentop and settled on the farm three miles west of that town, where he has resided for more than thirty years. Here he has a fine farm of 420 acres with all the modern improvements. Much of this land he has himself cleared. He is a breeder of high grade and thoroughbred Hereford cattle of which he keeps a hundred and fifty head. Mr. Swanson was married in 1880, to Miss Mary Caudle. They have nine children. Mr. Swanson has sent the first five of these to the Normal School, and they have all been teachers. He has sent three to Business College at Quincy. In politics Mr. Swanson is a Republican and was the nominee for Presiding Judge in 1906. He is a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church at Queen City.

If you are related to the Graves family that originated in Schuyler County from Richard Hardin and Berilla Burton Graves, this photo will be of interest to you.... It was taken in front of the Richard Hardin Graves home about 2 1/2 miles northwest of Lancaster about 1896. I don't have an original photograph, so the quality isn't the best. If someone who sees this has an original, I would love to copy it for better quality. In the photo are my great-great grandparents, Richard Hardin and Berilla Graves, my great grandparents, Martha and Samuel Casper Graves, and my grandmother, Elgie Graves Alexander. I'm basing the 1896 date on my great aunt Grace Ann Graves Roberts, who was born that year. She is sitting on my great grandmother's lap, and looks to be a few months old. On a side note, Grace Ann Graves Roberts, and my great uncle Herman Roberts were the last residents of the Hall House. In their golden years, they owned and resided in the two most historic houses in Lancaster: the Rupert Hughes house and the Hall House. If anyone shows interest in the Graves family photograph, I have a partial list of the people in it that I can post. See more

Glenwood Through January and February we'll be posting images from the slideshow/video we put together for the 175th anniversary of Schuyler County in 2020. We'll put up a few every week, and when the season begins in May/June they will be printed and kept in books with descriptions, dates, people, places, etc. Any details we don't have you are invited to share with us so we can write it all down for future generations. For some Schuyler County History, as told by the people ...who live it, check out the video on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9NuI0mWRWY&t=638s And if you would like to hear the full conversations with our storytellers, check out the recordings on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4UmF8iwRohgz97uGzhN8Tr The Home of our Schuyler County History is in the Hall House Museum in Lancaster. The beautiful house has a new coat of paint, the school and log cabin have had extensive renovation done, and inside you will find 200 years of local history that's been organized, tidied up, and ready for you to explore. Check back often, and especially for springtime updates when the museum is open for tours, studies, genealogy, and just to have a day to walk through and enjoy.
